You have made it out of high school, CONGRATS! I bet it feels exciting, amazing, freeing, and also a tad bit scary. I remember having all of those feelings the minute I left high school and was on my way to my first year of uni.
Even though you can’t wait to walk through the doors of campus, meet new people, get started on your classes, and make college memories, take a minute to take in the summer. This is the last summer before you are a college student, cherish it, remember it.
It is the start of summer here in Canada I figured there is no better time to throw this post up. Here are 6 things you need to do before your freshman year of college!
1. SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAM
Whether you’re excited to get away, or sad to leave, this is one of the last times to spend as much time as possible with your loved ones. I am not saying that you will never see them again, so it is ok for you not to spend every waking minute with them. But, as you head off to college and get wrapped up in your studies you will find it challenging to spend time with all those who are important to you.
2. SIGN UP FOR CLASSES, LEARN YOUR SCHEDULE, MAYBE GO FOR A TOUR
Going away to any new place is a little scary, learning where everything is, trying to make friends, familiarizing yourself with the new ways of doing. It can all be a bit much. The sooner you go sign up for class, the sooner you will come to learn your schedule, then, when all of that is figured out, take any chance you have to go explore the campus. This is a great time to map out where your classes are and learn how classrooms are labelled at your college.
3. CONSULT PINTEREST FOR INSPO
So, maybe that last tip scared you a bit. College can be totally overwhelming and scary, especially when you are just starting out. But I assure you, there is tons of fun right around the corner. You are out on your own, turn to Pinterest for some dorm inspo. Or, if you are living in an apartment consult Pinterest for organization tips.
I remember pinning for hours a day trying to gain some inspo for my first apartment and I remember it was some of the most fun I had the summer before I went to uni! You get to start designing a life that is completely your own, that’s pretty cool if you as me.
4. START NETWORKING
Networking is a very powerful tool in college. Networking is all about creating meaningful connections and the earlier you start doing it, the better. This can be connect with other freshman, student services staff, librarians, even the cleaning crew on campus.
The first person I met the day I signed up for classes is still to this day one of my best friends. I made a point early on to get to know as many people as possible and it helped me land jobs on the campus that I otherwise would not have gotten the opportunity to even hear about.
5. LEARN AT LEAST SOME OF THE ADULT-Y STUFF
One of the most challenging things about college is learning how to be an adult on top of learning how to do the whole college academics thing. You you were an extremely blessed and perhaps a bit spoiled teen like me then you never did your laundry living at home or had to cook a single meal. This is quite the luxury you have as a college student so learning how to adult will be extremely beneficial.
6. HAVE A LITTLE FUN
Yes, without a doubt there is a lot you need to do to prepare yourself for college but that doesn’t mean stop all the fun. Fun is going to look a little bit different to everyone but take some time to head to the beach, spend time with friends, travel, pick up a new hobby. Enjoy your days before college, you can’t get them back.
There’s just a few things to do before you walk through the doors of campus on your first day!
stay kind.
