If you are a student that means you have to pay tuition, book expenses, and living costs or some combination of the above.  Regardless of which expenses you have, it is always nice to make a little cash. When I was in college I had a few jobs right on campus. Having jobs right on campus made it easy to get to work and being employed by the university ensured my boss’ were very flexible when it came to scheduling. Having a job right on campus is super convenient and great way to build up your resume before graduation! College can be a tough time in terms of money but a part time job on campus can really ease financial stress.  Here are 10 Great money making jobs for college students!

Realistic ways for college students to make money

Tutor

If you find one subject particularly easier then why not become a tutor for that subject.  There will always be a market for this type of work because there will always be a student who is struggling.  All you need to do is schedule a time to meet with them, ensure you’re up-to-date on the content, and help them to understand the material. It is a pretty sweet job for college students if you ask me. Any student can do this too! Some students might just need help with studying for a test, so if you have good study skills pass those along to someone who would benefit from that knowledge. This is a job that I did throughout my college career and it was absolutely perfect.  I set my own schedule, took on as many or as few clients as I wanted and also set my own rates!

Campus Gym

If you find yourself spending time at your campus athletic center anyways you might as well check their job board.  The gym on my campus hires tons of students and is wonderful at working around their schedule.  One of my friends would go there between her class to work.  The best thing is that she got to do her own homework while it wasn’t busy and her boss actually encouraged it. I really recommend working on campus for the simple fact that employers realize you are a student first, employee second, therefore they are very understandable.

Student Services

This is another one I did in college.  Most schools will have some sort of student services that gives out information, does scheduling for academic appointments, and helps with setting up accommodations for students who need to be accommodated.  If you like to help others and want to network with those of higher positions at your college then this is the job for you! I personally worked alongside my school’s learning coach to help assist students with developing academic skills and navigating through college. In this department we also had our on campus counselling centre which would be a great fit for anyone who is a Psychology major!

Lab Assistant

Lab assistants help students during their designated lab times.  Typically there will be more than one of you at a time and you will help answer questions students have about their lab.  Schools hire assistants for math labs, science labs, geography labs, and nursing labs (I am sure there are lots of others too!). Basically you show up to the lab, and you guide students through the learning for the day or answer to them when they have a question, you might also help the professor with set-up for the lab.  Be prepared for working 3-4 hours at a time because that is typically the length of most lab periods.

T.A.

Becoming a teacher assistant is one job that I recommend for students for sure! Most professors will hire a student to help them with marking, labs, or even teaching the course – this is a dime on the resume. I have seen T. A.  job postings for all types of subjects, from math and science to English and drama!  If you want experience working alongside highly educated professors or just want to gain experience creating and teaching material to students then give this one a go!

Grader/Marker

If you want a stress free on campus job then this is the one.  Some professors will hire students to just grade tests and assignments for them – yes, that is all you do, they will even provide the answer key! Some professors might prefer you to marking in their office with them and others will be ok with you taking home the material to grade.  When I did this job the professors let me take the tests home and grade them just sitting in from of Netflix, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Barista

Anyone else a coffee addict? If you are in college there is a good chance you fill up on the caffeine from time to time (or daily hehe). There is no better place to work than at the campus coffee shop.  These jobs can be tough to come by because they are an awesome gig for a student but if you get your application in fast then chances are good you could be a barista!

Cafeteria Server

Students need to eat and there needs to be someone there to serve them.  This isn’t the most glamorous of the jobs but it is a job that will pay you. This job will look different on each campus, some might have you serving students, other’s it will be buffet style and you will need to help with set-up and clean-up, and other schools (like mine) might just have you taking payment or swiping student cards for meals. This is a great starting position to working in a high end restaurant and making tips later on in your college career, so don’t rule this one out!

R.A.

Every school will have a Residency Advisory kind of position, it is pretty classic. If you end up scoring this job then you will likely get housing for free or at least at a discounted rate! So yeah, you might not get a pay cheque, but if you are living for free then who cares!! This job will require you to be organized and personable. You will meet a lot of students and will have to help them in a few ways. You will have to help students with the transition to living in dorms, organizing events, and going to regular meetings.

Tour Guide

The start of the year is when this job will be in full swing! Tour guides show new students around campus.  If you work as a tour guide you will have to point out all of the important buildings and services, as well as show students where their classrooms are located.  I remember my first year of University I had some tour guides help me out and I still remember them to this day! If you genuinely care about helping others navigate through college then please consider this job, you will be remembered and can really make a huge impact on how someone’s college career starts!

Security Guard

Okay, so this one I have never done, but it is another option.  I have seen so many students walking around campus in security guard uniforms late a night.  If you are a night owl then this might be a good job for you. In most cases you will be with someone else and won’t be required to do anything too crazy. Most times you will probably just walk around campus with a flashlight ensuring no damage has been done, or checking doors to ensure they have remained locked after hours.

Research Assistant

Research is an excellent way to get noticed in any field of work. Professors tend to hire students who do well academically to help them with their research projects. One of my friends is an assistant in the Phys ed department where he helps collect, analyze, and input data into spreadsheets so the prof can later publish finds on the study. Your name will also be published which helps you get known in the academic world and could potentially improve your chances of getting a career in that field!
